Planning to Kick Procrastination in 2009? Why Not Now?
by Janet ~ December 16th, 2008. Filed under: Productivity Pointers.
As the end of 2008 draws near, many of us are taking time to reflect on our achievements (or lack thereof) over the past year, and looking for ways to make life better in 2009. It therefore seems like the perfect time to talk about Someday Syndrome. If you know Alex Fayle, you’re probably nodding your head right now, but if not, you may be asking yourself, “What is Someday Syndrome?” According to Alex’s website, there are three different forms:
Someday My Ship Will Come In – Waiting for, instead of pursuing, your dreams.
I’ll Get Around To It Someday – Wasting your life with navel-gazing and other procrastination games.
I Might Need It Someday – Filling your life with stuff instead of achievements.
To support his mission of curing people of Someday Syndrome, Alex has recently added links to some unique products for overcoming procrastination to his Someday Syndrome blog. In addition, he has recently launched a newsletter called Someday News, and when you subscribe, you’ll also receive 84 Tips on Overcoming Procrastination. If you’re really committed to making changes, you can sign up for his 9-week e-course.
Since working with Alex on the National Board for Professional Organizers in Canada, I’ve watched him overcome Someday Syndrome in his own life. A couple of years ago, he sold his house in Toronto to fulfil a lifelong dream of going to Europe and becoming a writer, and he is now enjoying the results of that decision. I could tell you more, but he tells the story so much better himself, so be sure to check out his blog and his newsletter.

Thanks for the heads up on Alex’s newsletter. I love his blog! I need to see if he can help me with the feeling of paralysis that I’ve been having lately. I’ve got sooooo many things that I need to, and want to get done in the next month or so that I find myself not doing anything (except posting to FaceBook and to other people’s blogs
)
I think the holiday season makes it difficult, too. My usual routine is thrown off because my son stayed with us for a week and I’ve been going out to lunch and to holiday parties. I know my Butt Wiggle Diet has gone out the window for the past couple of weeks!
How do you keep on task in December, Janet?

Melodee, one thing I do is avoid taking on any new projects if I can help it. Just today I turned down three projects, including one from a current client and one from a past client. I’m so focused on what I want my business to look like in 2009, that it’s not that hard to say no to anything that doesn’t fit into that picture.
(In other words, I don’t push myself as hard as I might at other times of the year.)
